Strategies and Policies for Cross-Cutting Themes-Gender.

ATBU as host Centre for SPESSCE will desire to put in place the following strategies and policies to increase the participation and retention rate of women (Girl-Child) in all the programmes offered by the SPESSCE Centre: Admission Policy

Priority will be given to female candidates where their requirements and cut-off marks for admission will be lower compared to their male counterpart. The ratio of male to female will be increased. Also subsidy in school fees will be promoted for female candidates.

Security

Good and well trained personnel are provided in the hostel and around the campuses to promote security of life and property. The Security Department of the Institution is well equipped with state of the art gadgets for proper monitoring and securing the learning environment for the girl-child. Training and re-training of the security personnel with special emphasis on gender issues will be vigorously pursued in line with global best practices.

Accommodation

There are postgraduate hostels that are well furnished with facilities on campus that will encourage proximity to academic activities within the campus.

Health Care

The Campus has a Medical Centre with specialized personnel. There are facilities for Ante-natal and Post-natal care which guarantee female students to cope with challenges of health in gynecology and maternity care especially for married women.

Day-Care (CRECHE)

There is a provision for crèche on campus that takes care of nursing mothers convenient for them in promoting academic performance and reducing inconveniences associated with taking care of their babies while they study.

Guidance and Counselling

The institution has put in place a functional guidance and counselling department that will provide advice and guidance in terms of needs of the female candidates especially with the well experienced personnel.

Mentoring

The good number of female Professors, Doctors in the academic and Non-academic are always willing/ready to interact with female students in areas of their needs/support academically and morally. This will be sustained.

Sexual Harassment

The Institution has put in place mechanism for prompt investigation of any reported case of sexual harassment and child abuse. Consequently, there is a standing policy in the institution where any staff caught in the act of sexual harassment or child abuse is punished by dismissal from the Institution and is published in the University Bulletin for general public to note.

Best Female Award/Scholarship

There is an award system for female students who excel academically every session. This serves as an encouragement to ginger the female candidates to increase their performance.

Inclusiveness

Provisions of physical structures are in place for students with special needs. More of such facilities will be provided to encourage such candidates to come and study in the institution.

Community Enlightenment

The Centre will continuously organize enlightenment programmes to the University community to raise awareness on Gender Based Violence, Sexual Harassment and Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.
